Brazil's Army occupies streets of Belo Horizonte to help reinforce security

About a thousand soldiers are monitoring strategic areas in conjunction with Minas Gerais Military Police. They come from the capital of Minas Gerais, Juiz de Fora, São João Del Rei, Santos Dumont, and Petrópolis.

The Brazilian Army occupied the streets of Belo Horizonte on Monday to reinforce the activities of public safety during the Confederations Cup. They are monitoring strategic points in conjunction with the Military Police (MP). Among the areas, soldiers are on Avenida Presidente Carlos Luz, near the entrance of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), in Pampulha, São Gabriel Station in the northeast of Belo Horizonte, and around Tancredo Neves International Airport, in the town of Confins.

The troops, who belonging to the 4th Infantry Brigade from four cities, Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora, São João Del Rei, Santos Dumont, and Petrópolis (RJ), are engaged in the plan to improve safety.

According to Lt. Col. Marcus Vinicius Messeder, the Chief of the Social Communication of the 4th Military Region Army, sending troops meet the Governor Antonio Anastasia’s (PSDB) request. The goal is to reinforce security measures during the sporting event so the games can take place in an environment of peace and harmony. "We will work together with the Military Police to ensure peace," said Lieutenant Colonel.
